Why do bad things happen to good people?
It’s a profound question that has troubled humanity for centuries. The Bible provides insight into this mystery through various passages. One such passage is found in Romans 8:28:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
This verse reassures us that even in the midst of adversity and suffering, God is at work, orchestrating events for a greater good that often transcends our understanding.
Additionally, in 1 Peter 1:6-7, we read:
“In all this, you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
This scripture teaches us that trials serve a purpose; they refine our faith and draw us closer to God. In our suffering, we may learn patience, resilience, and compassion, which can lead to a more profound relationship with God and others.
Lastly, John 16:33 reminds us:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus acknowledges that trouble will come, but he encourages us to remain hopeful because he has triumphed over all the suffering and sorrows of this world.
In summary, while we may not fully understand why bad things happen to good people, we can trust that God is present and working through our pain for our eventual good and His glory. Remember the promise of Isaiah 41:10 that He is with us through our struggles:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Hold on to these promises and trust in God’s perfect plan.
